In honor of Nancy Boles, a former OFLTA student member, the Executive Board of the OFLTA has established the Nancy Boles’ Memorial Student Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide stipends to student members to help defray the expense of attending state OFLTA conferences and workshops.
Nancy Marie Boles, 22, an OFLTA student member and a senior at Oklahoma State University majoring in French education, passed away unexpectedly in March, 2004. At the time of her death she was beginning her student teaching internship in the French kindergarten at Eisenhower International School in Tulsa, and had just completed her internship at Union Intermediate High School. Oklahoma State University posthumously awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education – French at the May commencement ceremony.
Nancy had been an active student member of OFLTA for two years, and was also a member of the Student Oklahoma Education Association and many academic honorary societies. She had expected to devote her life to the teaching of French, and was a budding young professional.
A few words from a former classmate:
“It’s been more than two years since I met Nancy for the first time. We were enrolled in the same class and already then I knew she would be a great teacher one day. She displayed all the great qualities that every teacher should have. She was extremely hard working, dedicated, and determined to become a foreign language teacher with a goal to make a difference. Unfortunately, she did not have enough time to have her own classroom and her own students but I know she would have been a great teacher. We will always remember her and she will always stay in our hearts.”

To Apply for the Scholarship
NOTE: In order to qualify for a Boles Scholarship for OFLTA Conferences and workshops, you MUST be a student member of the Oklahoma Foreign Language Teachers’ Association (OFLTA). The membership is $10 for foreign language education students when the professor’s signature verifies student status on the membership form. The membership form can be found here.
This scholarship is available to foreign language education students from ALL Oklahoma Colleges and Universities. To apply for a student scholarship, you MUST complete the regular conference or workshop registration form and submit it along with the Nancy Boles Scholarship Application (online or paper). You will be notified by e-mail if your scholarship application is accepted.
