Latin and The Direct Method Erik Ellis Latin Teacher, Holland Hall
This session explores the Direct Method applied to Latin with some examples of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading & Storytelling), Latin-Latin vocabulary lists, exercises and assessments, and an example lesson.
Rich Internet Applications from CLEAR David Nagle Assistant Professor of German, Oklahoma Baptist University
The Center for Language Education and Research is a federally funded regional center which has developed a suite of internet applications to assist world language teachers in their instruction. Participants will register with CLEAR (free) and learn how to use one or more application(s) as time permits.
Comparing Methods of Teaching L2 Vocabulary Katie Baker Student teacher/Researcher, University of Oklahoma
This session will present the results of a research study conducted with Dr. Teresa Bell during the fall semester. The researchers compared 5 methods of teaching Spanish vocabulary during a controlled experiment in a simulated classroom. This presentation will explore each of the methods (Visual, Kinesthetic, Flashcards, Mnemonics, and Multi-modal learning) in detail, examine its relative effectiveness, and provide some examples of how the method can be used in the classroom.

The cultural context of Latin is an important part of learning that language. Dr. Kyle Harper, OU Professor of Classics and Letters, will examine Roman Society from a historical perspective and share ways that this information can be integrated into the Latin classroom.

How can we gauge more accurately where our students are on the ACTFL scale? What matters is not what they know about the language, but what they can actually DO with it! A debriefing of SWCOLT ideas, lessons and summaries of the sessions Oklahoma teachers attended and presented in Fort Worth, April 7-9. We will share the best ideas and lessons brought back from the SWCOLT (Southwest Conference on Language Teaching) conference.

This session provides an opportunity for Latin speakers of all levels to speak the language with peers and colleagues. Many teachers embrace the idea of spoken Latin in their classrooms, but having never received Latin instruction in the target language, find the transition from teaching in English to Latin intimidating and frustrating. This session provides experienced Latin speakers, those interested in learning to speak Latin, and those who are just beginning to use the language, an opportunity among peers to improve their spoken proficiency with the Latin language.

ACTFL Webinar: Moving Students from Novice to Intermediate Webinar American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages This webinar will address various strategies to help students move along the proficiency spectrum in more efficient ways. Among those strategies: integration of functions, content, accuracy and text type in course design and lesson planning; immersion in the target language; a higher-order learning approach to all elements of the language; a proper balance between structured and creative practice, and empowering students through pre-speaking activities.
The Jenks FLAP Grant: Oklahoma's First Chinese Immersion Program Cheryl McCord Project Director / K-16 Chinese Initiative (FLAP Grant), Jenks Public Schools
The Chinese Immersion Program that has been established at Jenks Southeast Elementary is being established with the help of a FLAP Grant (Foreign Language Assistance Program) entitled "The K-16 Chinese Initiative" that was awarded to Jenks Public Schools by the federal government in the fall of 2009. Since this program is the only Chinese immersion program in the state of Oklahoma, the presentation will focus on the establishment of procedures, the use of funds provided by the FLAP Grant, the challenges faced in the first year and some of the successes.
