In this session you will learn the basics of Twitter.  Bring your laptop or your smart phone.  See how Twitter can help you expand your Personal Learning Network.  Learn about searching hashtags, retweeting, and direct messaging.  Brainstorm ideas for student/classroom use.

Latin and The Direct Method

This session explores the Direct Method applied to Latin with some examples of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading & Storytelling), Latin-Latin vocabulary lists, exercises and assessments, and an example lesson.

Rich Internet Applications from CLEAR

The Center for Language Education and Research is a federally funded regional center which has developed a suite of internet applications to assist world language teachers in their instruction.  Participants will register with CLEAR (free) and learn how to use one or more application(s) as time permits.

Comparing Methods of Teaching L2 Vocabulary

This session will present the results of a research study conducted with Dr. Teresa Bell during the fall semester.  The researchers compared 5 methods of teaching Spanish vocabulary during a controlled experiment in a simulated classroom.  This presentation will explore each of the methods (Visual, Kinesthetic, Flashcards, Mnemonics, and Multi-modal learning) in detail, examine its relative effectiveness, and provide some examples of how the method can be used in the classroom.

The Best of SWCOLT-Bringing Ideas Back to Oklahoma

This session provides an opportunity for Latin speakers of all levels to speak the language with peers and colleagues.  Many teachers embrace the idea of spoken Latin in their classrooms, but having never received Latin instruction in the target language, find the transition from teaching in English to Latin intimidating and frustrating.  This session provides experienced Latin speakers, those interested in learning to speak Latin, and those who are just beginning to use the language, an opportunity among peers to improve their spoken proficiency with the Latin language.

The Jenks FLAP Grant:  Oklahoma's First  Chinese Immersion Program

The Chinese Immersion Program that has been established at Jenks Southeast Elementary is being established with the help of a FLAP Grant (Foreign Language Assistance Program) entitled "The K-16 Chinese Initiative" that was awarded to Jenks Public Schools by the federal government in the fall of 2009. Since this program is the only Chinese immersion program in the state of Oklahoma, the presentation will focus on the establishment of procedures, the use of funds provided by the FLAP Grant, the challenges faced in the first year and some of the successes.
